If you are one of those intelligent people who believe that modern journalism should be about cultural overlaps, inclusiveness, truly unapologetic enquiry and veracity, then you are invited to write and photograph for Ciaroscuro. You will have access to every imaginable perk: entertainment events, famous artist(e)s, thinkers, books, screenings, exhibitions, etc. Above all, you will have the chance to build a very impressive portfolio, right at the epicentre of modernism. See below for further details...
Participants: This unique internship is open all students of journalism around the world. It is also open to students of the arts and social sciences, and suitably motivated members of the general public.
Purpose: To offer students of journalism the opportunity to refine their writing and photography skills within the arts and culture sector, while helping Ciaroscuro widen its perspective as a cultural chronicler and commentator. It is hoped that this will help students interface confidently with the relevant sectors of society and gain valuable contacts, while picking up credits towards their qualifications. Above all, we wish to enable interns to compile high quality portfolios for employment.
Eligibility: The internship is open to all students and practising or aspiring journalists, who wish to develop their arts and culture writing and photography skills within a practical, cutting-edge setting. Each intern is expected to demonstrate initiative, produce good journalism (and ideas for coverage), and aspire to our high editorial standards.
How it Works: The internship offer is usually introduced via a campus faculty member, who may either refer the journal formally or just bring it to the notice of students. If unreferred, students are advised to consult their tutors about participation, as this may prove vital in future assessments. The exercise is conducted entirely via email, and no formal application is needed, but a simple email to the editor (with sample work or URLs to published material, if any) will be very much appreciated.
As an intern, you will be required to do the following:
• Read the editor’s requirements thoroughly (download below).
• Submit articles or captioned photography to the editor, making sure to include your brief biographical note, photographic portrait (if any), your full contact details, and a cover note stating why you want to be our intern.
• Alternatively, submit an idea for an article or photography, stating your logistical and courtesy requirements, e.g. copy of book, free tickets, accreditation note, etc. The editor will normally arrange such material for you, if you forward all the relevant info, including phone and email details of person(s) to contact.
• Seek press releases and free photographs from organisers to help you develop your stories accurately (we do not pay for film stock/processing or transportation to and from assignments.)
If suitable, your article will be sub-edited and published under your byline and, when necessary, the editor will contact you to review the strengths and weaknesses of your submission. If published, the URL of your page will be emailed to you. Formal feedback on your work will be sent directly to your chosen faculty member, if requested.

Very Important: Interns are not paid for participating. We do not cover out of pocket expenses, and so advise you not to undertake any exercise requiring such expenditure, unless you are expressly commissioned by the editor to do so; in which case we will only expend minimal fees. We expect our interns to use their initiative to develop good stories from happenings and processes around them. We do not anticipate or encourage interns to use Ciaroscuro as a platform for politics, auto-critique and nepotism. Ciaroscuro places all arts and craft forms and cultural processes on an equal footing. We respect balanced and sensitive critique - destructive journalism will be rejected outright.
